My family and I took a ferry to the San Juans recently, and while we were waiting to leave the dock, we saw many cormorants on those structures pictured (I think they are for the ferry to bump into and not get damaged because they are padded.) But if you look carefully, you'll notice that those white streaks on the padding aren't there for decoration. Neither my sister nor I were able to catch a picture of these birds in action, but we witnessed them doing something we call 'projectile pooping'. They turned their tail feathers toward the water and were able to shoot their fecal matter into the ocean. Apparently only the inexperienced leave their white marks on the wall of shame, because all the ones my sister and I saw landed completely into the H2o. But hey, they don't seem to have anything else to do. You can almost imagine one of them calling over to one of his buddies and saying, "hey Phil, did you see that? That was totally a twenty pointer!"
